Sealing Rings & O-Rings
Choose the O-ring according to size and material, because it must fit in the groove or on the shaft. A wrong diameter causes leakage, so measure the dimensions carefully. Sets with many sizes and a wall-mounted case are ideal. Replace rings with cracks or deformation, because rubber ages.

Choosing the right O-ring
Size matters
Measure the groove or the axle accurately. An O-ring that is too small will pinch. A ring that is too big will leak. Use a caliper for the diameter. Also check the thickness of the ring. It must fit the depth of the groove.
Material and application
Rubber suits oil and water. Plastic rings resist other chemicals. Choose the material based on the medium. Check if the ring can handle the temperature in the workshop. Replace rings with cracks or deformation. Rubber ages, even in the box.
Sets and storage boxes
A set with many sizes is convenient. You always have a ring at hand. Store the rings in a box with compartments. This keeps the size recognisable. Pay attention to the form of the ring. Round cross-sections are common. Other forms are for special applications.
These rings fall under consumables, just like hose clamps that keep hoses sealed and circlips that hold bearings and axles in place. When fitting lines you also need hose connectors, and for bundling cables neatly cable ties are useful.
