Grinding and Polishing

Choose the right disc for grinding, cutting or polishing. The outer diameter must match your angle grinder. The grit size controls the finish. Use a cutting disc to separate metal. Use a grinding disc for flat surfaces. A polishing disc gives a smooth result. Steel, stone and stainless steel need different abrasives. Always check the maximum speed of your tool before fitting.

Grinding and Polishing: Choose the Right Disc

Grinding and polishing: the basics

For grinding, cutting and polishing you need the right disc. The diameter must fit your angle grinder. The grit size determines how coarse you work. A coarse grit removes a lot of material, a fine grit gives a smoother result. Also consider the material: metal, stone or plastic each require a different type of disc.

Cutting discs for metal and stone

Use cutting discs to cut metal or stone. These discs are thin and cut quickly. Choose the diameter that fits your machine, from 115 to 230 mm. The thickness determines the cutting speed. A thin disc cuts faster, a thicker one lasts longer. Check the maximum speed of your machine before mounting a disc.

Grinding discs for flat surfaces

For smoothing weld seams or removing rust, use grinding discs. These are thicker than cutting discs and sand evenly. The grit size determines the result. Coarse grits like 36 or 60 remove a lot of material. Fine grits like 120 or 180 give a smoother surface. Grinding discs are available for angle grinders with a diameter of 100, 115, 125 or 230 mm.

Polishing for a smooth finish

After grinding you often want a smoother surface. Use polishing discs and burnishers for that. These work with fine grits or felt. Use felt for soft metals like aluminium. Polishing discs with silicon carbide suit metal and plastic. Choose the grit that matches the material and the desired shine. Work from coarse to fine for the best result.

Accessories and how to choose

Besides discs you sometimes need accessories for grinding and polishing. Think of flap discs for removing paint or adhesive residue. Or sanding sheets with hook-and-loop backing for your random orbital sander. Check the connection size: millimetres or inch. For cutting metal or stone, choose cutting discs. For flat surfaces and weld seams, use grinding discs. For a smooth, shiny finish, take polishing discs. That way you pick the right disc for each job and work safely and efficiently.
