Oil Service
An oil change requires the correct tools. Oil filter wrenches come in band, chain or socket types to suit filters from 60 to 190 mm diameter. Sump plug sockets fit common plug sizes, often 8, 10 or 12 mm. Check the connection type, whether metric or imperial. Using the right tool speeds up the job and prevents damage.

Oil service tools for every workshop
Oil service tools
For an oil service you need the right tool. This category contains everything to replace oil and filter quickly. You will find wrenches, drain receivers, pumps and aids for engine and gearbox oil.
Loosening filters
You loosen a stuck oil filter with the right oil filter wrench. Choose the version that fits your filter. A strap wrench clamps a steel band around the filter and works on diameters from 20 to 190 mm. A chain wrench grips the filter with a chain and is available for diameters from 60 to 160 mm. For filters with a hexagon or 12-point shape, use a socket version. Always measure the diameter and form of the filter before ordering.
Special filters and profiles
Some filter housings need a specific profile. For that there are special oil filter wrenches in 6-, 12-, 14-, 15- or 16-point. These wrenches are made for brand-specific filter housings. An oil filter pliers with adjustable jaw is a good choice for a hard-to-reach filter. Self-adjusting versions work quick and without crushing the filter.
Drain plug and sump
You loosen the sump drain plug with an oil drain wrench. Usually that is a socket in 8, 10 or 12 mm. Check the drive, metric or inch. For a leaking sump or damaged thread, choose oil drain screws and thread repair sets. These restore the thread and prevent leaks.
Draining and filling oil
Catch the old oil neatly in a drain receiver. Choose a model that fits the oil volume and the space under the car. To pump oil from a drum, use an oil pump. Siphon pumps are for thin oil, rotary pumps move thick oil. When filling, a filling aid for gearbox and engine oil prevents spills and contamination. Check the hose length, it must reach the filler opening.
Check and choice guide
Always check the length and OEM number of an oil dipstick. Only replace with a dipstick that fits your car exactly. For other aids like drum dollies and special sockets, look in other oil service. In short: loosen filters with a strap wrench, chain wrench or pliers. Filter housings with a profile need a special wrench. Loosen the plug with a drain wrench. Catch oil in a drain receiver and fill with a filling aid.
