Answers to the most common questions from our customers
The drive size determines the torque you can apply. Use 1/4 inch for light screw work and awkward areas. 3/8 inch is standard for most car work. For wheel nuts and heavy bolts choose 1/2 inch. A smaller size is manoeuvrable but snaps faster under high torque.
A swivel handle has a pivot section at the end, which lets you change the direction of force. An angled head can be set at an angle up to 15 degrees or more. Both improve access in tight spots, but the angled head offers more freedom in awkward positions.
Only with an adaptor. A 1/4 inch extension does not fit directly on a 3/8 inch ratchet. Use a reducer from 3/8 to 1/4. Note that an adaptor takes the maximum torque of the smaller size. Never exceed the limit or you risk breakage.
Look at the material: chrome vanadium steel is strong and stiff. The finish should be smooth and corrosion resistant. Also check that the connection clicks tightly into the ratchet without play. An extension with a ball detent holds the socket firmly, but verify it works properly.
Yes, but avoid exceeding the adaptor's maximum torque. An adaptor reduces the drive size and cannot increase the torque. Do not put a 1/4 inch adaptor on a 1/2 inch torque wrench unless you set the torque very low. It is safer to choose the correct drive size.

Choose the right drive size
The drive size of your ratchet determines the torque you can apply. For light work and tight spaces, choose 6.3 mm (1/4 inch). This size is manoeuvrable and suitable for small bolts. The standard size in the garage is 10 mm (3/8 inch). With that, you can turn everything from interiors to brake calipers with good feel. Heavy wheel work and suspension bolts require 12.5 mm (1/2 inch). That delivers the required torque without breaking the ratchet. So first check which ratchet handle and sockets you already have.
Ratchet mechanism and grip
The number of teeth in the ratchet determines the swing angle. A fine 72-tooth action gives a small 5-degree step. That works well when space is limited. Also choose a handle that suits your working position. A spinner handle is turned with thumb and forefinger, without changing direction. A flexible handle tilts the head, so you can apply force where a straight handle does not fit. A non-slip surface keeps grip with grease hands.
Extending and bending
Extension pieces bring the socket to a deeper or less accessible place. Use a short piece of 50 mm for work around the engine. For door pillars or the underside of a car, take a longer one of 200 mm. The longer the extension, the more strain you put on the drive. Therefore, choose one piece of the desired length instead of coupling several together. For awkward angles, use a universal joint. It transmits the drive to a socket at an angle, without twisting the ratchet.
Adapters and storage
Adapters allow a change between drive sizes. An adapter piece from 3/8 to 1/2 inch lets a small ratchet work on a large socket. Only use an adapter up to the torque of the smallest size. A 1/2 inch torque wrench with a 1/4 inch adapter is asking for trouble. Keep your sockets organised on a socket rail. That way you see at a glance which size you are picking up and your workbench stays tidy. A sliding bar gives extra leverage when tightening heavy bolts.
Selection guide
For light screw work and interior work, choose a 1/4 inch ratchet with short extensions. For medium work on passenger cars, 3/8 inch is the right size. Heavy work on axles and suspension requires 1/2 inch. If you have a torque wrench, always check the drive size before buying an extension or adapter.
