A torque wrench tightens bolts and nuts to a precisely set torque. This prevents over-tightening or under-tightening. It is crucial for brakes, wheels and cylinder heads. Too tight can strip threads, too loose can let parts come apart. A torque wrench gives confidence in the correct force.
A click torque wrench clicks audibly when the set torque is reached. You feel and hear the signal. A beam type has a scale you read while turning. Click types are user-friendly and suitable for workshops. Beam types are often more compact and accurate but require attention when reading.
For most cars, 1/2 inch is the norm, especially for wheel nuts. 3/8 inch is for smaller bolts in the engine bay where space is limited. Look at the sockets you already own. If you mostly have 1/2 inch sockets, choose a wrench with that drive. For engine rebuilds, consider an additional 3/8 inch.
After use, set the wrench back to its lowest setting. This prevents keeping the internal spring under tension. Store it dry and protected from impacts. Have your torque wrench calibrated annually if you work professionally. For hobby use, every two years is enough. Calibration checks deviation and adjusts it.
A torque multiplier increases your turning force on a nut. It is used to loosen rusted wheel nuts or bolts. You attach a breaker bar to the input drive and a socket to the output. The gearing delivers up to five times more torque. It is not a torque wrench because it measures nothing. Always use a torque wrench afterwards to tighten the wheel properly.

The basics: torque wrenches and assortments
The torque wrench is the heart of your work. Choose the torque range that fits your tasks. For passenger cars, 1/2 inch with 20 to 210 Nm is the standard. If you want to be complete right away, choose an assortment. These contain multiple wrenches in different drives. You always have the right size at hand. Pay attention to accuracy. Three percent deviation is fine for regular work.
Accessories and insert tools
With torque accessories you extend your wrench. A torque angle gauge is essential for angle tightening. You use that for example on cylinder head bolts that you first tighten to 25 Nm and then turn 90 degrees. Insert tools replace the fixed head of your torque wrench. This way you reach awkward spots too. Always check that the tool fits your wrench.
Torque multipliers and torsion bars
For heavy work on trucks you use a torque multiplier. It multiplies your pulling force up to five times. This way you loosen seized wheel nuts without an air wrench. Note: it does not measure torque. Always use a torque wrench afterwards. Torsion bars prevent over-tightening. They sit between wrench and socket and click through at the right moment. Handy for blind assembly.
Maintenance and choice guide
A torque wrench loses accuracy over time. Worn pawl and spring are often the cause. With a repair set for torque wrenches you replace those parts yourself. Always set the adjustment wheel back to the lowest setting after use. For daily use, annual calibration is necessary. In short: for general car repair work choose a torque wrench and socket set. For angle tightening take accessories. For heavy work on trucks use a torque multiplier. That way every screw is always properly tightened.
