Test devices for every diagnosis
In a modern workshop you measure more than just voltage. Think of air conditioning, brake fluid, paint thickness and oil pressure. For each measurement there is a specific device. Choose the device that fits the systems you maintain. This way you work targeted and avoid incorrect diagnoses.
Air conditioning and leak detection
For air conditioning service use air conditioning test devices. They measure pressure and check the system. A leak detector helps you quickly determine where a system leaks. For closed systems like air conditioning or vacuum lines, use an ultrasonic detector. For cooling systems and fuel lines, a gas detector works better. It picks up propane, butane and other gases.
Testing electrics and batteries
For electrical diagnostics you need multimeters and voltage testers. A quick voltage check on 6-24V systems can be done with a simple tester. For in-depth measurements choose a multimeter. Test batteries with battery testers that measure voltage and cranking current. Make sure the tester is suitable for 12V or 24V systems.
Measuring temperature and paint thickness
Infrared thermometers measure temperature from a distance. This allows you to quickly check brake discs and exhausts. Do not measure bare metal, as it gives an incorrect reading due to reflection. Paint thickness gauges determine the thickness of paint or powder coating. Most gauges work on ferrous metals like steel. For aluminium or stainless steel, choose a non-ferrous version.
Engine, brakes and vacuum
With oil pressure testers you measure oil pressure while the engine is running. This shows directly if the system still works. Brake fluid testers measure the moisture content in brake fluid. A high percentage means a low boiling point, which is dangerous. Vacuum guns test vacuum actuators, EGR valves and brake boosters. They operate on compressed air and create vacuum or pressure.
Seeing and listening
Borescopes bring the inside of engines, pipes and body parts into view. Pay attention to the IP protection rating against dust and moisture. Engine stethoscopes amplify sounds you would otherwise miss. This helps you find ticks or hums in the engine, bearings or gearbox.
Selection guide
For an air conditioning fault, start with a leak detector and pressure measurement. For a battery that starts poorly, use a battery tester. If in doubt about brake fluid, measure the moisture content. For diagnosing strange noises, choose a stethoscope or borescope. This way you always have the right device at hand.
