Drills
Choose your drill bit based on workpiece material and point angle. HSS twist drills suit wood and steel, while cobalt and titanium coatings extend tool life. Step drills avoid pilot holes in sheet metal, and sets or single bits deliver any diameter.

Drills for metal, wood and sheet steel
Drills for every job
Choose the drill based on the material. Wood drills have a sharp point that keeps the centre. This prevents tearing. HSS twist drills are suitable for wood and steel. For harder metal, use cobalt or a titanium coating. That extends the life of the drill.
Sheet steel and concrete
For sheet steel, use stepped drills. They cut holes with increasing diameters. You do not need pilot holes or a centre punch. The steps guide the cut in a smooth motion. For concrete or masonry, use masonry and concrete drills. They only work in a rotary hammer. The shank must match the machine. SDS is for light hammers, SDS-Max for heavy ones.
Large holes and special jobs
For holes in wood, metal, plastic or tiles, use core hole drills, drill bits or hole saws. The choice depends on the material and the required diameter. A left-hand twist drill removes broken bolts. The direction of rotation then turns against the bolt.
Single sizes or sets
Drill sets supply several diameters in one storage box. A tool set combines the sizes you need daily. Single drills are for the sizes you use often. Check the shank type. SDS fits in a rotary hammer, a cylindrical shank in a standard drill. Choose your set based on the job. For standard use, HSS is sufficient. For sheet steel and hard metal, choose a stepped drill or a cobalt version.
