Spanners for every job

Spanners are the most used tools in the workshop. The right choice depends on the job and the size across flats. Measure the nut or bolt and decide if you need a ring spanner, open-end spanner or a combination.

The standard choice

The combination spanner is the standard for every mechanic. One end is a ring, the other an open jaw. The ring grips the hexagon fully, the jaw is handy in tight spots. For two sizes in one tool choose double ring spanners. Those have two closed rings and come in extra long versions for more torque. Where a ring does not fit over the thread, use open ring spanners.

Working with open jaws

A double open-end spanner has two open jaws and fits two sizes. The jaws are angled at 15° so you can work in confined spaces. A single open-end spanner has one size and is often hardened for heavy-duty work. Machine spanners also fall into this group. They are extra strong and meet DIN 894.

Special applications

For work on live parts use insulated spanners. Those are approved for voltages up to 1000 volts. An adjustable wrench fits any size with a turn of the worm. Useful when you do not have the right fixed spanner at hand. For seized nuts use slogging wrenches. You strike the striking face with a hammer. Crowfoot spanners fit on a torque wrench or ratchet. That way you reach nuts in awkward places. Special spanners are for jobs where standard tools do not fit. Think of flexible heads or extra flat versions.

Keep your spanners organised

With accessories you keep your spanners tidy. First count the number of spanners and then choose a holder with enough slots. That way you always find the right size and the tools stay protected.

Which spanner do you choose?

For general work the combination spanner is the best choice. Is there little space, use an open-end spanner. Do you need high torque, choose an extra long ring spanner. For electrical work take insulated tools. That way you always have the right tool for the job.
